Newport (Salop) 28 Moseley Oak 24

Moseley Oak's first match in Midlands One was played away against the team that came down from National Three at the end of last season.

A tough assignment however Moseley started well and led from the first score until the 80th minute. A competitive line out was balanced by a scrummage under pressure from Newport's big pack.

A good start led to strong drives from Neil Mason and James Weaver and the resulting series of penalties led to the first successful score. 3-0. Newport levelled after offside before Moseley went ahead with a second penalty. Two minutes later good hands from Charley Thomas and Tom Johnson put Moseley in to the right of the posts. 13-3.

Looking in control, Moseley Oak dropped the kick off giving Newport their first strong field position and the resulting try was converted. Two Newport attacking line outs from penalties were well defended before a penalty was conceded at the scrummage and Newport levelled the score going into half time.

A good start to the second half saw a driving try from Neil Mason after a good line out and a further penalty after powerful forward progress. Newport's scrummage advantage was telling and a further penalty resulted and a yellow card for Newport's Tight Head and another Moseley penalty made it 24-15 with 9 minutes to go.

Two significant moments were an individual try from Newport's 13 after poor Moseley tackling and a try in the last play of the game after a fine cross kick. Just a bonus point to show after a decent effort but much to work on.
